| This Steatite pot has lug handles and a small notch for a ladle. This one was probably unfinished as you can see all of the chisel marks. Finished Steatite pots are usually polished and smooth. Steatite is a very soft material with a high talc contenet in the stone. It is easily scratched with your finger nail. This intact pot dates to the Terminal Archaic and is associated with points such as the Snook Kill, Perkiomen. Susquehanna Broad Points and Orient Fishtails. These pots predate Pottery in Connecticut. There are several known quarries in Connecticut but they are in State Parks and off limits to collecting. This pot was colelcted on private property in Litchfield County Connecticut in 1974. |
